10 Summer Exercises to Keep Your Hunting Dog in Shape

Although the driven hunt season may still be a while away, a hunting dog needs to stay in good shape year-round.
Summer is the perfect time to keep your four-legged companion both physically and mentally active.

Here are 10 exercises that will help your dog stay fit and ready for the hunting season:

  1. Short jogs in the early morning or evening. Avoid the heat of the day — cooler hours are much safer for your dog.
  2. Swimming – the best summer workout! Builds muscles, protects joints, and keeps the dog cool.
  3. Basic obedience training in the yard. “Come”, “Down”, “Find” – repeat basic commands playfully and in short bursts.
  4. Hide-and-seek games in the forest. Hide a treat or toy and let your dog track it down – it trains the nose, focus, and search instinct.
  5. Muscle training – light hill walks. Walking on uneven terrain helps build hind strength and overall muscle tone.
  6. Tracking trails (1–2 km). Lay a short trail in the morning and let your dog follow it later – great for scent work and patience.
  7. Light pulling exercises with a harness. Use a special harness and let your dog pull a small weight – start very lightly.
  8. Retrieving in water. Fetching games in the water are both fun and physically effective.
  9. Running next to a bicycle (only in cool weather!) A great way to build endurance — but only if your dog is ready and conditions are safe.
  10. Relaxed walks in new environments. New surroundings offer mental stimulation and improve focus and obedience.

PRO TIP: Start slow, monitor your dog’s condition, and always bring fresh water. If your dog shows signs of fatigue or overheating — take a break!
